Broke something (Installed radeonfb + DRM -> nuked consoles)

Well, I've been playing with Debian testing for the last few months, and this is the first time I'm really stuck.

I was playing with modconf, and I decided to install some stuff that looked like it might reduce flicker and general slowness in KDE (namely radeonfb and the ATI DRM). Well, KDE didn't improve, but now I can't see my consoles (Ctrl-Alt-F1 etc just give a black screen). Googling around, I learned that apparently the radeon fb and DRM don't play well together. Ehm... okaaaaay...

Now my problem is how to remove the modules without getting the "Device in use" error. Someone please tell me how to do this?

(By the way, I can still use KDE, so I don't have to fix this without being able to see what I type I hope )

editing lilo.conf to include `vga=normal` run `/sbin/lilo` & reboot should get your console back. Dunno about grub though. <edit- you may need to comment out your current vga= setting.>

you should be able to remove the module `radeonfb` at this point - replace it with `vesafb`
if not, try `init 3` for console mode (no x) or `init 1` for single user mode & try again.

if you succeed in replacing it, comment out `vga=normal` in lilo.conf, rerun lilo to update, & reboot to get back to normal.

HTH

Thanks for the info! I won't be able to work on that box until tomorrow, but I think I can get it sorted out now. Only thing is I'm using grub instead of LILO, but I'm reading the grub docs now and it looks like it's easy enough.

I definately need to do some more reading on the startup process...
