broad explanation needed

I installed a new pci sound card on my pc, which already has an onboard soundcard. The new card comes up on the "lspci" , but of course my distro still uses the onboard one. All I want to know is *how to begin* to configure the onboard out, and the new one in. Is it a modules issues? i.e. is it just a question of using insmod/modprobe? Maybe I need to recompile my kernel? Just not sure about the overall method.

I know it's customary on LQ to give full details of pc, distro etc. but I'm just looking for general ideas on how to go about it, a method if you like ...

Thanks in adv

i think you should just install the new alsa-drivers and then run alsaconf from root. And then select your card when alsaconf will ask you.
