Cool brightness and VI on ubuntu

Hi, I just installed ubuntu 10.10 on my latop (Acer aspire 5736z) with win7 on another partition. I have 2 problems now.
1) I can't adjust the brightness, I press the fn key combination to change it (the only way to do it) and the bar with the brightness indicator appears and moves as I adjust it but the brightness on the screen remains the same. How can I fix that?

2) I previously asked this question on another thread but it wasn't fixed. I'm taking a C programming class and I'm using VI text editor. First I had the problem that I couldn't delete anything with bakcspace like I did in school using putty. every time I used it on my computer it wouldn't work(on terminal not putty). Now I have another problem, I can't even change anything. If I open it with nay program I've compiled I can see all the source code but I can't do anything with it. I can input some characters but that only gives a character per line and the code is not color coded either, it's all white. I removed VI and reinstalled it again to see if that fixed it but it didn't so I've been using nano which is not as good as VI. Any ideas on how I can fix my problem?
i would appreciate it

1. This depends exactly on your manufacturer's dsdt file, but it's something like

/sys/devices/virtual/blah/blah/blah/acpi_video0/brightness

cat it, add a few, and echo that back to it.

2. There's a lot of options for vim settable in ~/.vimrc or /etc/vimrc. you can type
:set
to see what's operative, and search the net for some geek's config file that you like. The number of options and possibilities is actually dangerous to your time. Just googling vim color, I find
:syntax on/off
