Just built a new PC with a Leadtek Winfast card that uses the GeForce2 MX chip, and 64 megs vram. I am using an old U.S. Logic monitor that can do 1280x1024 @ 60 hz. I have installed RedHat 7.0 ok, but can't get X to start. First, I ran Xconfigurator, and it found my card and I entered in all the correct specs, but when it came time to test the configurations, it couldn't start the xserver and said to do it manually. So I removed the XF86Config file and used xf86config, entering all the correct values (i did it at least five seperate times). xf86config wrote the file fine, and then when I tried to startx, it didn't work. It seems to go ok until this error appears:
Fatal server error: No screens found I don't know what this means or what to do about it. Can anyone help me out? Thanks in advance, bobthebat |
Which version of XFree do you have? The newest version may help out your problem. Make sure that you are using the right Xserver (ie SVGA or whatever). I would check with someone who has managed to get that card working which one they used. Check the file top to bottom. I know this is hard, but there may be some little error in the way it is set up. May be you could try to go to the lowest setting possible and see if this works.
Another thought may be the kernel has to be upgraded to get the best out of it. Does it use DRI? I a'int too good with these new cards! :) Annnnnd another thought is that don't you have to install seperate drivers from nvidia to use the GeForce? Here is a link to a problem page I found: http://www.cs.utk.edu/cs594ipm/cgi-b...-lab3/737.html [Edited by CragStar on 06-04-2001 at 06:26 PM] |
its alllll ok
Well the problem was fairly simple to fix. I just got the linux drivers from nvidia's site, installed them, and editied my XF86Config file a bit, and it works great now. Thanks cragstar.
