Borked internet acccess on Suse 10.0 install

Hi all.

This is my first post here, so please excuse me if the problem I have has been seen and solved before. I tried searching the fora, but couldn't find anything that addressed the problem I'm having.

Ok, here goes:

After a few goes at Linux (with Knoppix, MEPIS and, for a short and unhappy period, Ubuntu) I finally thought I'd found the distro that could spell death for my Windoze partition forever: Suse 10.0 (the full version, not OSS) which I found on the cover of Linux Format this month. I installed it after Windoze had screwed up my MBR, forcing me to reinstall both my Windows and my Linux OSes. there was probably another way around this, but I couldn't find it, so I went for the full reinstall.

So, I partitioned my disk, installed Suse 10.0, spent a day or so un-crippling media playback and away I went. Worked like a dream. I've even managed to share my Thunderbird mail settings and store between Windows and Suse, which is a big help.

However, I am now having an intractable problem with my internet connection. I'll give the details:

-----------------------------------------------------------------
System configuration:

Dell Dimensions 8400:
Pentium 4 3.0GHz
160GB Internal HDD, dual-boot Suse 10.0(KDE GUI) and Windows XP.
250GB External Maxtor OneTouch USB HDD connected via 7-pot external USB hub

Internet connection:

Sitecom WL-144 Wireless Router (connected to Dell via an ethernet cable, not wirelessly) which is my edge router to:

Samsung NTL set-top box modem

Symptoms:

Last night, machine OK. Yesterday I installed and enabled Apache, MyPHP and MySQL and it was OK. I rebooted last night and it was still OK. This morning, I started up the box, logged into Suse and:

When I log in to my Suse KDE desktop, absolutely everything is fine, but I cannot connect to the internet with any of the applications (Kopete, Konqueror, Thuinderbird, etc...). Error message is "Host cannot be contacted" or "Malformed URL"

Diagnostics undertaken so far:

ping from console to:

Router - OK
Gateway - OK
DNS - OK
localhost - OK
Other internet hosts - "cannot be found"

Checked connection from Windows - OK (that's what I'm using now)

I saw in the startup log that 'SubDomain profiles cannot be located - are you sure you have the right privileges?"

Steps taken so far:

I uninstalled Novell AppArmor and related SubDomain packages as I don't need them and they seemed to be causing problems. No difference.

So, does anyone have any idea what I should do to solve this problem? I want to get back into Suse and into my development environment again. I've tried to provide as much information as possible because if I need to provide any more, I'll have to reboot twice.

Thanks in advance,

ihrtfm.

Resolved. I spoke to a freind of a freind about it.

The problem was that the system could not resolve the DNS address. I added the following lines:

nameserver 194.168.4.100
nameserver 194.168.8.100

to /etc/resolv.conf and it was all better.
