bootup logs

I have some errors when I bootup and would like to view them if they are in a log file. I have looked in /var and there is not a log file for system startup. I am using a gentoo system and am not sure where they might be..

The command dmesg will show kernel messages. There's a limited amount of messages which are kept, and this shows the last messages. If you run it directly after boot you should see all the messages since the system was started.

You can also look in the /var/log/messages file. This is not truncated between boots, so you might need to use the date and time to work out when the last boot happened. The first message I see on boot is something like this:
Code:
syslogd 1.4.1#18ubuntu6: restart.
...but it might be a little different on your system.

I looked at messages and dmesg, I didn't really see any errors or warnings. It looks like I'm getting the errors or warnings when the system starts to load modules. Would there be a log for those or a way to halt the boot process so I can read the messages?
