bootsector corruption

Hello Linux users,

I am using a dual operating system on my P-II 350 MHz machine with win2000 and Mandrake-9.2-kernel-2.4.24 with rtai-adeos patch. At the time of booting, I get some strange error messages(end_request I/O error). I'm afraid that this could be something to do with my hard drive. I am pasting the #dmesg (lines with errors) below, please any help me in understanding the problem and fixing it.

Thanks,

Raghu

It does seem like a harddisk failure. Did you force-reboot this machine recently?
Try fsck and do a
man fsck
To see the options.

shutdown -rF now will reboot and fsck your disk...

thanks for the replies, I did force reboot my system many times as my system occassionally hangs when dealing with rtai modules. But I rebooted now properly and the errors were the same. The next thing I did was running the fsck using #shutdown -rF now. I still get the same error messages while booting. How serious are these errors, is my system losing stability?

After the file system check I got the following messages,

fsck: ^B/dev/hda6: 149336/388608 files (2.7% non-contiguous), 611443/777136 blocks

sck: ^B/dev/hda8: 27165/250368 files (0.5% non-contiguous), 119579/499802 blocks

Thanks,

Raghu

those messages are simply stating the current state of your hard drive's fsck'ed partitions.

nothing to worry about.
