Why do you want to boot from the CD? Isn't xp installed on your machine? Are you trying to reinstall? How did you install it in the first place? Is it an OEM install? Are you sure your computer is compatible with the XP version of the CD?

did you turn on cdrom booting in bios and put it on the top of the boot list? is the cd working on other computers?

By what I read above you state 'I have installed 2 os in my laptop xp and linux'. Do you want to boot the XP? How do you boot the Linux with Grub/Lilo? Which distribution?

As others have stated you probably need to change the boot order in your BIOS. But if you are trying to re-install Win XP after the Linux install then you will have to jump through a lot of loops. It is a lot easier to install M$ XP first then install the Linux.

If it's a bootloader problem then you will need to use your Linux install cd to boot then modify/edit your bootloader configuration.

we have also faced the same kind of problem many times.
i am using RED HAT ENTERPRISE LINUX 5.0 server edition.
we also did use the steps that u have posted.
i think this is a version problem current linux version is higher than windows XP. and we can not install lower version on higher version.
if you will try with "VISTA" or "windows server edition" you will be able to install.
plz try and reply me

I don't think it has anything to do with linux or windows version.
I think it has more to do with the fact that windows doesn't recognize linux and isn't able to boot when linux is present on the 1st partition. On which partition is Windows installed please?
