Booting Ubuntu of external HDD

hey and thanks in advance. I wanted to know if there is a way to lets say put Ubuntu on a external HDD and have my win7 on my internal HDD. and when I want to use Ubuntu just plug it in and boot Ubuntu and still be able to save my files etc. will I just have to change boot priorites and put my external drive first and if I do that will it save every time or will I be booting the origanl ISO file and have to start all over again.. any help would be apreiciated

This setup should work just fine, boot the install cd/dvd with the external plugged in and install to that. (Even unplug the windows drive to avoid errors).

To boot from the external, usually BIOSes have a boot menu so you can do a one-off selection of the drive.
