Booting time very high

I have win xp and redhat 8 on my system. Now whenever i boot linux it gets stuck on "checking hdc" ( as my hard drive is secondary master so hdc and not hda ) for atleast 1 hour.
I have installed linux again but the problem remains. Otherwise it works perfectly. Also where i can configure the applications which are loaded at startup ??
