Booting RHEL4 U2 from USB Hard Drive

Hi All,

I'm very new to this forum and also very new to Linux because of a job I recently took. My question is regarding booting up the RHEL4 U2 I have successfully installed on my external drive. The problem seems to be recreating initrd.img and configuring the grub.conf to get Linux to successfully boot up my external drive.

Before modifying anything, whenever I boot up my laptop after installing Linux (USB HDD set to be first bootable HDD), there is a kernel panic that is expected because the USB drivers are not loaded.

I have already looked and and followed steps outlined in "simonf.com/usb" and "benusa.com/linux/boot.htm" (sorry forum says I need to post 5 posts before being able to put in URLs and this is my first one) with no success. I have also done a search on this forum to try and find out more information to help but am still stuck with the same problem. The problem now is the system will boot up normally, and then it will hang while loading grub. On top left you see "GRUB" and the cursor.

Can anyone help me with this issue? I greatly appreciate any help to point me in the right direction. This being the first real task I've ever done in Linux besides installing drivers/applications.
