yancek -- I tried the "something else" and "dev-sba" -- several sba's in fact and some sbb -- but all I got was a "Root File Not Defined". Couldn't do anything so went back to install-erase screen.

First of all, I am shocked, as I have never seen Lubuntu on a CD. Didn't realize they had a version that small. Wondering what software it has on it.
Also, you said XP stopped booting, what did it do? (since Linux isn't booting either, wondering if you have a hardware failure).
I think most of us have done stupid things at one time or another, so you did remove the cd before rebooting so the hard drives would boot?
If so what does it do? (did it just show up as a command line, # )

LinuxUser -- When XP stopped booting it just gave the message about NT. I removed the CD before trying to boot. I changed the booting order in BIOS every which way. Booting from a USB stick is not an option offered. After the first failures to boot I did change a few things, which had no effect then but will probably bite me later.
