Booting from USB hard drive

I just installed SUSE 10 on an external hard drive. Whenever I try to boot SUSE from the boot loader it does not find the drive it is installed on. The only way I can get it to start is to boot from the CD, select installation, let it find the usb devices, and then boot the OS instead of installing. Is there a work around load up the usb device before it tries to boot from it.

Thanks,

Gab

either your bios, or your kernel doesnt support booting from a usb device.

if its the kernel, you could fix that. if its the bios, you cant, but you could work around it by installing the stuff you REALLY need to boot to a small partition on a non-usb drive (250 megs would surfice) and then mounting the usb drive automatically to do the rest.

i hope this is usb2.0, or it might bottleneck a bit.

My bios supports booting from a usb drive. It is usb 2.0. Will the bootloader setting have anything to do with getting this to work.

Does the bootloader need to be installed on the external hard drive, and then have the bios boot from usb. If so, how do I get the bootloader set up properly on the ecternal drive?

The bootloader definately needs to be on the drive you tell BIOS to boot from.

How to put it there? I guess you select the drive where to put LILO (or whatever you use) when you setup the bootloader.

I put the bootloader on the external hard drive, I know my system is booting from it because I turned off booting from the internal drive. I get to the bootloader but I'm still having the same problem, it won't find the swap drive I have.

I have 2 other partitions on the drive should that matter? If it is starting the bootloader why can't it find the swap drive and all that? It just keeps kicking me to a $ console.

Kinda fustrated here any help would be appreciated, let me know if more details about my problem are needed.

Thanks

Gab
