Boot Times, why Linux is king!


Fresh install of Windows 8.1. - 27.60 seconds from post to desktop.
Established install of Manjaro. - 14.19 seconds from post to desktop
Fresh install of Windows 7 in Virtual Machine Manager - 18.24 seconds from post to desktop

Lucky you didn't install QNX or dos or BeOS.

Windows Vista.....c.72 seconds (wiped from my hard-drive almost 4 years ago)

Long IPL on an IBM RS6000 J40 circa 2000; 45 MINUTES at least! (depending on memory and No of processors) Yee Ha! Now that's what I'm talking about!
If I remember correctly that could be BEFORE it loaded AIX, the hardware POST tests were quite substantial! (You could set the quick IPL flag though which shortened it a bit)

We had a system for mass destruction that would take over a day to boot up. Seemed odd, what if we needed it in the mean time?

or when MS Vista was VERY NEW
phoronix.com did a boot review

and one of the machines WAS!!!! grandmas old xp box from 2001-3 ish
vista took something like 30 min. to boot


now

fast boots are fun

i "can" get OpenSUSE 12.3 to boot to the user login in 10 sec and to the user in 20 total
( with DISABLING the network on boot)

35 sec to login screen with the very SLOW Wide open west cable connection starting on boot
