Boot root from Grub

Hi all,

This is another Grub question in the RH9 which I think someone
out there has an answer for it

The question is how can I change the Grub setup file so
that when I login have a line to boot in text mode?

The two lines on the bootup are all for XWindows
and one for DOS but none for text mode. Jorge

Thanks for the help.

You just pass a single digit to the kernel on boot to specify the runlevel, you probablt want runlevel 3 so add something like this into your /boot/grub/grub.conf :

title Text Mode
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.20-20.9 ro root=/dev/hda1 3
initrd /boot/initrd-2.4.20-20.9.img

change the root partition, kernel and initrd to reflect your configuration

cheers

Hi,

So that is where one adds the runlevel in the grub.conf
file. I did wonder about that.

Thanks.

Hi all,
To let all know how this problem was sorted out.
The grub.conf section for the text mode is as follows:

title Red Hat Linux-text (2.4.20-8)
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.20-8 ro root=LABEL=/ /dev/hda1 3
initrd /initrd-2.4.20-8.img

I hope this can help somebody with the same problem.
Jorge
