Boot problems: Need your assistance
 

Hi there. To begin with, let me declare that i am a total newbie to Linux. Following that, i just finished the installation of Slackware 10.0. I wanted to set up a dual boot system with Win 2000 + Slack and exactly did so.

I finished the installation and during the set up screen, as advised on what was more recommended by the installation itself, i chose to have the boot record be installed on the super block of the linux installation (hope this is making sense?)

So i finish going through the setup and when i reboot, the machine simply boots to Windows. I remember that the setup screen said something about using fdisk to point to the paritition containing the boot record. However, i have no clue on how to go ahead except reconfiguring and having the boot loader on the Windows MBR (which was recommended to be unsafe??).

Help please. Your help will be much appreciated.

Do you mean you installed the boot record in the root partition? I've never done that before, but I wouldn't expect that to work. If you have the time I would just reinstall over it and write the boot record to the MBR. As long as you installed Windows first and Linux after, you shouldn't have any problem dual booting.

EDIT: formatting....

If you use cfdisk you can toggle it a partition is bootable or not. There's also a way to do it in fdisk. And I believe a partition has to marked bootable for you to boot to it. At least in my case I have both the XP and the / partitions marked as bootable.

Thanks for the info on marking a partition bootable. I shall try that and come back to post the outcome.
