Boot problem Suse 11.4

I have this old server box that I installed Suse 11.4 on it. It booted the first time with out of range on the monitor. So when I put vga=0x317 it gets all the way through the boot up it seems, but it stalls out when the lizard come up about halfway across. Is there any way to find out what is stopping it from booting. I am able to boot in Safemode with the Vga settings above.
Thanks
Ron
