Boot Problem... L99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99...
 

I am trying to install Slackware 9.1 on my computer. The installation works fine, but when I try to boot the newly installed system, all I get on the screen is "L 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 (fills up about 1/2 a screen and then the system just hangs". I would expect to see a LILO message, but nothing... I have reinstalled the system about a million times with the same results. I have tried different file systems and different partions without success. Funny thing is that I did have it working about a month ago before I installed a new network card.

Any ideas what to try next?

I got this problem when i installed Vector, which is slackware based. The problem was fixed when i used the cfdisk utility in the install to delete the old linux partitions and created a new one for swap, and then a Linux partition. I chose "Linux Partition" but it didn't work, do i did "Linux Extended" and it worked after installing to that.

Maybe that will help if re installing LILO doesn't

My guess is that you need to lose that network card for now and see if it works. You mentioned that you had it working before you tried to put that network card in. ...and don't discount claudius753's post, you may for your configuration only be able to have a single Linux partition and a swap partition, though I don't see why. I've seen some wierder stuff out of computers before.

I did try with just one 4GB partition and no swap, but that did not work either. I guess I can pull the network card, but that would be strange if that really has anything to do with it... But stranger things have occured.

Well i just tried installing Lilo again and same problem.

this time i created a partion using a windows 95 boot disk.... then I changed the partion type from windows to linux 83.... I am reinstalling again.

I had this before, when I re-installed it worked fine next time.. not much help I know but thought i would post it.

my brother is having the same problem, he is running peanut linux though, Im on slack 9. Mine works fine, so I know its not just configuring the lilo wrong, no clue....

well that did not work either... back to the drawing board.

I have installed this software some many times now, I don't know what else to try.

i did install Red Hat on this computer and it worked fine, just a little slow... and I thought Slackware was a little faster, so I deleted Red Hat and was trying to reinstall Slackware. Now I keep getting this L 99 99 99 problem... I wonder if Red Hat left something out on the disk and now I can't get rid of it??? Maybe I should try to install Windows 95 and then Slackware again? I just hate to give up. Anybody got any ideas???

I'm not clear if you ripped out that network card. Did you?

Try to check the cable connections and that the RAM and everything are all seated. Also, find a low-level format utility for your hard disk brand (Seagate, Western Digital, etc.) and low-level format it before you try again. I'll be honest, I don't know what this is. I got another Linux misbehavior or two I'm trying to cure. I'm at a loss for those as well.

I did not try removing the network card. It is the only communications I would have on the machine. I really need it and I don't see why that would cause the problem.. But maybe I am just a little lazy.. I think I will install window 2000 in the box and check all the hardware out... Or maybe I will just have to put back Red Hat, that seemed to work. Just a little slow. My PC is only a 265 MHz, 128 MB Ram and 4 GB hard drive.

I hope someone will be able to help...

i had the same error wen installing a linux distro and just fiddled with some bios settings and got it to work

My friend also had a similar error with windows XP but he used a boot disk thingo

any idea of what bios setting were changed?
