boot problem from external drive & SD-card booting

Hi,

I would very much appreciate if anyone could shed some light on a couple of questions of mine:

I recently attempted to install Mepis as I it seems to be a distro well fit for newbies. The computer I'm using isn't strictly speaking mine. However, I do have an external harddrive on which I made the installation. When booting up with the external hard drive, the first linux page shows with the 'boot:'-command line and everything seems fine. But when I choose any of the options available, I get an error message reading something like 'drive not found' and I'm taken back to the boot screen. Why is that? and is there anything to do about it?

My second question is concerning the possibilities of creating a bootable SD-card. As the computer I'm using doesn't have a floppy-drive, that would be really great. Is this possible? and how is it done?

wrong section?

Please do tell me if I've posted the thread in the wrong section of the forum. Perhaps it should be under 'general'?
