Boot Problem?

RH9

My linux box is behaving badly and I'm not sure what to do. Its been running for a year without a problem

The initial part of the boot process appears to work with a number of statements appearing followed by OK, but it won't present a text or graphical login. When the text login appears it then disappears 4-seconds later followed by a blank screen then reappears and continue in this loop.

Previously with would boot to the graphical login screen.

The odd thing is that the web services appears to be running as I can access them over the local network or from the Internet. FTP is up but telnet reports the root password is incorrect and any other account I use is reported as expired.

I tried booting from the origional RH CD and performing an upgrade but the problem remains and I can't access my web mail.

The only other information I can give is that when I now look at the terminal login screen there a whole page of MAC addresses looking like:

IN=eth0 OUT=ff:ff:ff:ff:ff.. DST=213.152.44.87 LEN=78 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x0 TTL=128...

This is continoius printed down the screen.

I also noticed a similar reference during boot followed by ntpd FAILED, but as this is to do with accessing the timeserver I ignore it.

I'm completely lost and would appreciate any help. My PC doesn't have a floppy drive so I never created a boot recovery disk. I'm reluctant to rebuild as I have valuable data stored in Open Mail which I can no longer access.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Sounds to me like X just isn't starting up right. Can you try having it boot to single-user mode (try adding the command line parameter "single" to the kernel when booting), or boot off of a liveCD / emergencyCD, and look at X's log?

(It should be somewhere under /var/log)

Hi, I don't know how to interact with the boot process but using ftp I've captured the contents of two logs. The first one seems interesting. Does it help and what do I need to do to correct the fault.

Thanks

I honestly am not sure what to do. Maybe a font file became corrupted?

Maybe the solution would be to replace a lot of your main system files with the ones (which should be identical) from the package files - but I don't really know how to do this on Redhat, let alone without booting into redhat (doing it from a rescue CD).

Do you know how to do this, or does anyone else have any ideas?

Thanks, the article was useful and as suggested I searched for unix/:7100 problems on the Internet.

Apparently, the cause of the problem was lack of disk space. I cleaned up my filesystem, did a reboot and whow!!! its working again.

Thanks everyone for your help.
