boot problem??

On a new install I got to the point in the install where I generated a BOOT diskette. So now I'm using the boot diskette to bring up the system and during the boot I get to the LOOKING FOR NEW HARDWARE and it stops - no way to proceed. Is there any way to get around this and complete the boot - this is a completely new install so I have never logged in or anything. Seems strange a boot would hang at LOOKING FOR NEW HARDWARE and not time out and continue the boot. I have tried Alt-F1 etc and other key strokes to bypass this with no success. Thanks
