Boot loader problem with suse 10.2

I have installed linux from a dvd for the first time, without any problems until I got to the boot loader configuration. On my Pc I have two disks, master with win XP and slave with suse 10.2; slave is set as boot in the bios.
I tried several possibilities in the setup of the boot loader with nothing was accepted. I cannot remember the exact error message, but it was something with "parsing a number". At last I just dropped it thinking I could do that later. But I cannot boot on the Linux drive (unplugging win XP). I have tried to run a repair from the dvd apparently it also gives the possibility of repairing the boot loader, but do not do anything.

The only way I can help is to tell you to hook up both drives and set bios to boot the "master" first. Grub will put a file in with the XP master boot record. I don't know what you have done but Suse usually doesn't give any problems on dual installations. If you had the XP drive disconnected when you installed Suse then you got some work to do. Use the "search" at the top of this page and enter Grub in the forums line, there are a lot of articles for help.
