Angry Boot Loader Issues

Recently installed mandrake 9.2 on a 2nd (slave) harddrive on my win98 system. the install seems to go smooth except when I reboot the system and the boot loader doesn't work. the System just sits at a black screen or a screen with "L"'s and "O"'s running half way down the screen. I have tried the two different loaders without any luck! Does anyone have any suggestions. Beware I am completely new at linux.

PS - I was able to restore the win boot loader so I could get back into win but have never been able to boot into linux.

thks

esj

From experience: the ls and o's are a problem between your kernel choice and the bootloader, not being nice.. reinstalling lin can fix it, but that's not really a lin solution.. can you boot mandrake with a bootdisk, which bootloader is default on install? which bootloaders have you tried, and gave you the errors?..

The bootloaders I have tried are grub and lilo which are the ones that come with mandrake. I believe that the lilo gave me the L's and O's while grub gives me just a blank screen with no activity. The bootloader is installing on the windows hard drive (primary). I have yet to install the loader on the 2nd disk because my sense is that the win loader would just superceed the linux loader on other disk.

thanks for the help

using toms root boot disk

I found out about Toms Root Boot Disk and am using it to try and get around the bootloader. I can mount my installed mandrake drives (mount /dev/hdb1 /mnt) but I don't know where to go from here.

Is there something similar to typing win at the dos prompt to start windows to be able to start mandrake?

If anyone can offer some help I would appreciate it!! Toms Root Boot Disk gets me to a # prompt under its own root. So if someone could step me along from there it would be great!!

Thanks

Esj

try the man page on chroot
you should be able to just mount your linux / partition, run chroot,
mount -a, and be good to go.

this is a workaround, not a fix, you should definetly try to solve the bootloader issues, and use this method to boot up in the meantime. unless you really like to boot from a bootdisk.
