boot issue

I have Win98 and Mandrake 8.0 installed on my computer. When I turn it on it displays the screen that gives me about 5 seconds to choose whish os to boot up before it automatically boots up linux. Is there a way I can change that to wait until I input which os I want to boot up, or at least automatically boot up Win? Thank you

Hi there

Yes there is a way to do what you want.

I dont think you can turn off the auto boot countdown, but lilo simply boots into the first operating system on the list in its config file.

All you have to do is locate the file, sorry I dont know the exact name, and re-arrange the order so that windows is at the top.

Simple

Ammendment to the above.....

The file is called lilo.conf

In it there is a list of all available boot options

Each boot option has a label

The Linux label is would you believe Linux

Have a look at your Windows Label then at the top of the file there is an option called defualt and at the moment it should read default=linux simply change this to point to the Windows label

I changed the default line, but it still automatically loads linux. Here's a copy of my lilo.conf if it helps any.

boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
default=windows
keytable=/boot/us.klt
lba32
prompt
timeout=80
message=/boot/message-graphic
menu-scheme=wb:bw:wb:bw
image=/boot/vmlinuz
label=linux
root=/dev/hda5
initrd=/boot/initrd.img
append=" hdd=ide-scsi quiet"
vga=788
read-only
image=/boot/vmlinuz
label=linux-nonfb
root=/dev/hda5
initrd=/boot/initrd.img
append=" hdd=ide-scsi"
read-only
image=/boot/vmlinuz
label=failsafe
root=/dev/hda5
initrd=/boot/initrd.img
append=" hdd=ide-scsi failsafe"
read-only
other=/dev/hda1
label=windows
table=/dev/hda
other=/dev/fd0
label=floppy
unsafe

Thanks again.

Hi
Did you run lilo again before reboot to commit the changes? Just type lilo in a terminal.
