boot ->iso

ok so i have linux(puppy) installed and i'm trying to figure out how to install a different dist on the same HDD. i have a 2G partition set up and been using grub. im currently trying to put slackware on the new 2g partition(/dev/sda3). grub is set up to find kernal (bzImage) and initrd (initrd.img). grub apparently finds these does some stuff while printing to screen, but then gets to a certain point and doesnt go any further, after bout 5 mins screen goes black.
so heres what i think is the problem---grub sees kernal and/or initrd files does some stuff and then doesn't know where to find the actual files for the os. i haven't been able to find out how it gets directed to the os files. so maybe there are some parameters in grub i have not included, or i havent included a certain directory, so plz if anyone has any ideas of what is going on i would like the input.

What's your installation media, cd, usb, network ? Also which version of slackware

vendtagain 09-11-2009 01:46 AM

its from the hard drive, puppy is the only OS installed. i have made 4 partitions through gparted(i think). currently i have no cd burner on this or my main laptop so it's difficult to make boot cds. it has usb which i use to put files onto it, but too old to support usb boot.

hard drive
slackware version 13.0
current OS is puppy 4.2.1
using GRUB to dual-boot

Hi there,

So from what I understand, you have a linux distro (puppy) installed. You would like to have a second OS running, from which you would the choice a bootup. To do so, you don't have the possibility to make a sec ond install from a CD/DVD or from USB memory. If I understand this right, I don't believe you really have a problem, specially since you are using grub (which is the one I know best).

1. You need to choose which Linux flavor you want to install.
2. Download the "vmlinuz" and "initrd.img" files from a website (the one you prefer or that is closest to your location). I normally use something like mirror.switch.ch or ftp.solnet.ch, since I am living in Switzerland.
3. With root rights, you must move these two files to /boot/, calling them something like "/boot/vmlinuz-install" and "/boot/initrd.img-install".
4. Still as root, open your grub file (with your favorite editor), and add these two options as the default setting.
5. Reboot your box, and you will get into the installation mode. Once there, choose to install over the web.

Cheers.

No experience with Slackware 13 but a full install of Slackware 12 is around 4GB if I remember correctly. So be very carefull with what you install if you only have 2GB space !

fatra2 problem is my internet not has a bad connection(its through wireless that my apartment offers free). Also i am using a mac to download all the stuff then move them over to the linux laptop with a pen drive. the laptop im using for linux is ancient and does not have wireless capabilities, apartment doesnt offer ethernet connection(or whatever that plug-in internet is, i forgot heh). so hdd is really my only option until i get own internet set up here, (which may be later today) i guess im stuck doin homework for the time being.

o and i got damn small linux to boot from the harddrive just fine, but when i tried arch again(modifying grub kernel and initrd to fit arch of course) I ran into the same problem as before where it jsut stops in the middle of something(configuring ram possibly, from seeing output on screen) and then sits there for bout 5 minutes then screen turns black.

linus72 09-11-2009 03:29 PM

You didnt specify your hardware, so hard to diagnose the blkack screen
did you try the failsafe settings?

also, you have puppy installed?

OK, go get netbootcd here
http://netbootcd.tuxfamily.org/

which can netinstall any major distro
not Arch though...

so, download that, extract it or mount/copy it to your puppy partition
and boot it from there

heres sample menu.lst for netbootcd from hd

Code:

title NetbootCD-3.1.2
root (whatever your puppy is, say (hd0,0) for 1st hd, 1st partition)
kernel /boot/kexec.bzI quiet nolocal norestore base
initrd /boot/nbinit3.gz

if you stiill get the black screen
add

vga=normal, vga=788, or vga=791
to the kernel lin above like

Code:

kernel /boot/kexec.bzI quiet nolocal norestore base vga=791
did you install puppy as frugal or a full hd install?

vendtagain 09-11-2009 07:29 PM

its a dell inspiron 2500,128 w/ 128 ram, 20 G HDD, 800 or so MHz processor, about all i know offhand. Its puppy full. No internet available, so no netboot...
just trying to get another os to compare with puppy.
this comp's internet is crap, goes in and out alot, so anything more than 600 MB or so im not even gonna try to download.

linus72 09-11-2009 07:37 PM

OK
ummmm...

GRML-medium provides fluxbox and runs good at 128mb, just dont use the "toram" option

dsl, tinycore both would run well on 128mb

I could put together a nice multidistro package for you
I could tar.gz em or .zip and you could download each seperately

grml-medium is 205mb
tinycore 11mb + plus you netinstall apps(this would already be installed if i did it for you, what apps you want?)
dsl is 50mb, but "vintage" and not updateable..

I built geml-magix off grml-medium-daily build sid based, 082709
you want grml-magix by itself?
357mb I think
http://multidistro.com/fluxboxp/fluxboxp.html

the puppy is rescuepuppy and darkmagic is pmagic

I made it so you can install any of them without cd/usb

vendtagain 09-11-2009 08:23 PM

hrmmm..well
any of those sounds great
i'm a newbie linuxer (only bout a week now!) so i'm still figuring out what its all about, and would like to try out a few different distros or versions(all of them are new to me).
since you offered(hurhur) ya ill take whatever(as long as its good..).
As far as apps go, well not sure what is out there or available, so i dont have any specifics, except I would like compiler for (c++ at least) ...hhmmm haven't really done much thought or research on the apps yet. just throw in a few cool doodads (lol for lack of a better term).

linus72 09-11-2009 08:41 PM

ok
well, I'm actually making improvements to grml-magix now, while jammin Metallica and squashfs'n

so, like good, gotta-have apps for a "light" low ram desktop are

fluxbox window manager
isomaster for extracting isos
k3b for buring isos', etc
gparted for slicin the hd
iceweasel and the lighter midori + flash10 for browsing
rox file manager
lots of terminals
awesome stereo multimedia sound video etc
provided by aumix-gtk, audacious, and others
ease of use thru menu editors etc
abiword word processor
uh...gftp
gdebi-gtk for installing stuff
apttitude
a deep and current repository
the Debian repos!

my grml-magix has all that in 365mb

heres the pkg list for grml-magix
http://multidistro.com/fluxboxp/select.txt

thats gonna change this weekend
I gotta get rid of opera
add some scripts, edit the initrd.gz, and try and clean it up

vendtagain 09-11-2009 08:50 PM

ah thanks ill be checkin this stuff out

linus72 09-11-2009 08:52 PM

LOL
what kinda music you into?

i'm gonna make grml-studio too
you can beta test it:)
