Angry boot failure

I am a newbie to knoppix. Just got my knoppix cd today.
While booting the message appear and the computer hungs.

Initrd extends beyond end of memory (0x0eff452e>0x0eff0000)
kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount roots fs on 01:01

My computer is an athlon 1800, with 256mb of mem. I have two hard drives: 40GB & 20GB. The primary (20GB) is formatted in ntfs. The OS is xp pro.

Please help if you can. It would be really good to use something other than Microsoft.

More info, please.

Did it successfully install?

If it did, what boot loader are you using?

boot failure

the boot device is a dvd rom

I have also used a boot diskette and the result is the same.

I took the cd to work and tried it on a machine running windows 98, result the same.

what other information do you need.

The answer to my first question, which I will assume is no, you never got it installed.

I need to know where it is hanging up at. What was the last thing it did. Also, swittch to the other consoles (Alt-F1 thru F6) and see what messages they have.

Why are you using knoppix instead of a mainstream version?
