Boot DVD from Grub command line
 

Hi, I have a friend who would like me to install openSUSE on there laptop for them. They have a DVD drive in the laptop but it seems that the laptop doesn't support booting off of DVD Drive. Is it possible to boot into the Grub command line with a floppy disc, than boot the DVD from the command line?

If the PC has a floppy drive you can use Smart Boot Manager.

Can you tell us the laptop make/model?
Most new laptops should allow booting from optical drive (cd or dvd drive).
You may have to go into the BIOS to tell it to boot from cd/dvd, or press some function key to get a boot option list.
You can also try booting from USB flash-drive if supported!
As there are ways to make Linux bootable flash-drives!

The laptop is a Dell Inspiron 7500
It is about 8 years old and i'm quite surprised it actually has a DVD Drive in it. I've had a look and tried booting the DVD by editing boot sequences without success. It also seems that there is no BIOS update to allow booting from DVD unfortuanetly. Thus the reason i'm looking for a hard way to do it :P

As louieb says, just use Smart Boot Manager.

Acts as a "new BIOS" and lets you boot almost anything
without changing boot order.
