Boot disk with new kernal

I am having trouble installing slackware 7.1 from my cdrom. If i put the newest kernal on a floppy, would that be enough? Would I be than able to install all the programs from cd after that??

I don't think that will help, what;s your problem with your cdrom?

Here is the whats going on with my system. I start the computer. It stops at the bios boot area and says "floppy disc(s) fail (40)". there is an option to continue hit f1 or hit del to enter bios. I hit f1 to boot from my cdrom. Boots from cdrom, I hit enter at the boot: prompt. Usually from here is says that I have a CRC error system halt and I have to shut down. Sometimes it continues to let me log in at the root. If i get as far as logging in as root, the computer will eventually freeze up during some part of the set up, causing me to hit the power switch, shutting it down. I than restart the computer, end up at the bios boot area, hit f1. 1) sometimes you hear a click after I hit enter and it reboots back into the bios boot area again. 2) Sometimes if i hit f1, it will do nothing and freeze up right there. 3) Sometimes after I hit f1 the screen goes black with just the cursor up in the left hand corner and the cdrom never boots. 4) Sometimes I shut down and the computer never even gets to the bios boot area, i hit the power switch on the front of the computer and it doesnt shut down so i have to flip the power button off on the back of the computer.

I am sorry, my descriptions may sound like rants from a fool but I am a little frustrated right now. I just built this computer from the ground up. I was able to partition my hard drive and write it to the disk with no problem but it always freezes up. Help.

to me, it seems like your bios is having problems, not too sure. Do you have problem setting up you PC using another distro? or do you have problems installing windows? try to update you system bios, and if possible do a drive-fitness test and resetup again.

I have the same problem with other disto's and while trying to install windos.

my suspicious is that your pc hardware is defective or there's some problems lie somewhere with your board, or your disk, or drive. Are you able to get another hard drive? you have gotta test out one by one to rule out the possibilities that which item is actually the root cause of all.

luck!
