Books, CD's, Anything for Mandrake 10, Linux in General !!
Looking for some books or CD's that could possibly help me make the transition to Linux.. As the other day It took me 45min to figure out how to install FireFox... But not really as it seems that I'm using Mozilla.. not fire fox.. Crap... I'm such a newb.. Anyway I'd like a beginners book that would let me understand what diffetent things are used for... how they are set up.. why they are set up that way, what specs do I currently have in mandrake 10, how to install MP3 Player.. Kernel, Bash, WinX..etc... See I know these words.. But have no CLUE what they mean.. So basically my question is what is a great book to start off my journey into Linux.. Ya know.. Something to kind of lay the foundations of learning this language !!! I see many on Amazon.. but would like some feed back on what would be appropriate for Mandrake 10 !! Thanks-A-Bunch Guys/Girls !!!!
When I first considered going to linux, I picked up a nice cheap book called Red Hat 9 for dummies. Some sections can be *extremely* basic, but as a newb, I liked it. It goies over everything from installing XMMS to configuring IPtables, and installing/running tripwire and snort. I know, its a book about RH, but the two are close enough you should find it useful. It also has a handy refrence of common terminal commands.
I had a similar experience converting over to linux. My first choice was Mandrake but the lack of info frustrated me so much that I reinstalled Xp. What to search for? Where to go? How to understand the answers you find !! The only info for Mandrake I could find was for 9.1.
After researching through the website and distros, I visited the Debian website. WOW!!!! So full of info, and all free to download :-)........ I tried out Debian - Sarge and would not change my distro for quids!!!! Yes it is harder than some distros out there but you learn about your computer and linux in a way you never would with Windoze.
Slackware site are a fantastic source of information also. You don't need "Mandrake" in the title to learn about linux.
