Black screen when switching from terminal to desktop in Minr

Hi,

I've decided to try Linux Mint for more than a minute but ran into a problem. When switching over to a terminal (using CTRL+ALT+F1 for example) and switch back to the desktop, I get a black screen. No white cursor flashing in the upper left corner. Nothing at all.

I'm using a Dell Dimension 3600 with 80gb hard drive space and 512mb of RAM. The video is integrated onto the motherboard.

I should mention, Cinnamon crashes and goes into fallback mode when loading.

Can I please get some help?

I'm not sure what is causing this specific problem but, I expect you will have difficulty as 512MB is the minimum for Mint 16 so if you are using 17, it will be at least that. You might be better off using a lighter version of Linux if you cannot add more RAM.

I agree with yancek; antiX and linux lite, the former Debian- and the latter ubuntu-derived lightweight distros; oftertimes Softpedia and Sourceforge are good alternative sources for decent distros like n00bix (haven't tried it, but sounds appealing) may prove to be

Thanks for the replies.

Looks like I'll have to distro-hop yet again. I'd rather stay with Mint; I don't have to use the tty terminal, but I prefer it. Gnome-terminal works just fine.

I could always go back to sonar or Lubuntu, but it probably gets frustrating for people if I ask questions and keep distro-hopping.

Going to take a look at noobix, sounds about my speed.

FYI: LXLE won't allow user to 'shell out' to the tty terminal last time I tried it; I dumped LXLE for this reason alone, myself.

Wink

Enlightenment is a wonderful desktop environment, and it lets me use the tty console with no black screen upon resuming the desktop! There are some things I don't like about it and having some problems with, but that's a topic for another thread. Thanks for the recommendations!
