"Black Screen of Death" on Ubuntu 8.04 fresh install HELP PLEASE!!!

Hi, now I'm having a big problem...

I just installed Ubuntu 8.04 on my powerpc machine, and I rebooted the computer.

At the first prompt, I choose "l" for linux, then yaboot comes up. I do "Linux", and it starts booting up. Then, the screen turns black and it says "Loading" for about half a second. Then, then screen is totally black. Nothing. I tried Ctrl-Alt-Delete, Ctrl-Alt-F1.

Nothing works

HELP ME PLEASE!!!

Hi. Sorry, we need more information.

Did the install process go ok, or were there problems. Is this a dual boot machine etc.

This link might help http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=862935

sorry...

i got ubuntu off here: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/releases/hardy/release/
i chose ubuntu-8.04.1-alternate-powerpc.iso, and i burned to a cd.

i installed ubuntu on my laptop, and since then it's been messed up.

No error messages.

No dual boot, just a clean install from ubuntu 7.10 from before.

Thanks in advance

Are you sure your laptop has a PPC chip in it? I assume it's an older mac laptop.

If not, that's likely part of your problem. Most modern computers (with the exception of some macs) have either an x86, amd64, or ia64 chip.

However, if your computer is indeed a ppc, then this isn't your problem...

As past people have said, more info would help us solve the issue.

kidalex 10-11-2008 12:20 AM

i'm sure.

it was running mac os 10.4 before, and i remember that it was powerpc.

what information specifically do you think people will want to know?

i'm a big newbie

:)

If possible, boot from the cd, open a console and look at the hard drive in /var/log to see what messages are being posted, especially in Dmesg. There could be an explanation there.

kidalex 10-11-2008 12:50 AM

i booted the cd, then did alt-f2.

i typed in "cat /var/log/syslog" it displayed a lot of output, and unfortunately you can't scroll up.

here's the last lines i can read:
Code:

Oct 11 05:40:11 kernel:  [    5.584600] usbcore: registered new interface dirver usbfs
(date) kernel: [      5.584674] usbcore: registered new interface driver hug

(date and kernel and number in brackets:) ohci_hck 0001:10:19.0: new USB bus registered, assigned bus number 2

Then some more lines about all of my hardware. Post if you think this is needed.

At the end there's something interesting:

Code:

DEBUG: resolver (libc6): package doesn't exist (ignored)
DEBUG: resolver (libnext0.52): package doesn't exist (ignored)

Thanks again

btw, i have ATI Mobility Radeon graphics card

kidalex 10-11-2008 01:43 PM

is it possible that 8.04 doesn't support my graphics card?

please help me!!!

Hi

Sorry, had a couple of days off, couldn't get near a computer.

One of those debug lines looks worrying. libc6 is rather important, and if it isn't installed the system is unlikely to work. Are you able to verify the cd. It may be the problem.

dasy2k1 10-14-2008 08:03 PM

sounds there like your install borked there

why not try the main umbuntu desktop cd for powerpc (the alternate is for advanced users only or those with not enough ram to run a desktop)

looking at the problem (missing glibc is preatty critical (second only to missing kernel!)) i would recomed a re-install
