BIZARRE - Cannot connect to sound daemon...
Using RH 7.2 w/ AWESB64 and seems fine...until the user logs out and someone else logs in. Then there is this error like
"Cannot connect to the Sound Daemon..." and indeed the sound will not work at all. But then if we REBOOT, all is well again. When the sound works and the same person logs out and back in again, there is no problem. Its only when another user logs in. And it doesn't seem to matter what kind of user (privledges, etc seem to make no difference here). Any suggestions for this bizzare behavior? Thank you! P.S. Upon reboot, it makes no difference which user logs in. The sound works fine. |
a few questions : do you know which sound daemon you're using? (probably esound) what happens if you log in to a user, don't use the sound, then logout and log in as a different user?
either the daemon is improperly configured, or there's a hardware configuration problem. my best guess is that your sound is set to be run by only a privledged group - that way, the daemon needs to be started at boot time instead of login time, and it probably doesn't log out properly. you'd want to chmod the permissions on the /dev/dsp and /dev/sound and /dev/mixer to 777. |

Yes, we get the same error. We even unchecked the box in the Sound Settings "Enable sound server startup". Thank you very much for your help. We'll try out your suggestions and post a follow up. Mahalo [er, Thanks] again! |
try unlocking the esd socket
esdctl unlock |

Same Sound Problem
(this is my first time visiting here - I found this forum searching for a solution to my problem with the sound daemon)
I have EXACTLY the same sound problem reported by KahanaNui. I am running RH 7.1, and the sound always works for the first user logged in after boot, but no other user. Interestingly, if the first user re-logs in before rebooting, the sound still works for that user. I am now looking at the two suggestion in this thread, but have not solved it yet. I probably complicated things by installing the Advanced Sound Daemon last night. I THOUGHT that fixed it, as the very first test worked with a different user. Unfortunately, when I rebooted this morning, the problem is back. I do not know enough yet to even tell if ASD is actually running instead of ESD. I guess I will try to remove ASD first. Any other ideas would be GREATLY appreciated. I will post back with my results if I can figure out how to fix this. Thanx ! (in advance) |
