BIOS settings?
Okay, so I installed knoppix onto the hard drive, sweet.
Now, I want to wipe the disk out totally, & re-install from scratch. I burned a 'DBAN' .ISO CD. However when I boot the machine with the CD in, I still get the GRUB menu .. so, Is there a command to type in the GRUB to boot from cdrom drive? Or, how do I change the BIOS order in knoppix, from the kernel shell somehow? :newbie: Thanks! :study: Fondspararna |
Change the boot order in BIOS so your CDrom ( or DVD ) is ahead of the hard drive. It will then look there first for a bootable system.
Once you boot up the install CD, there will be tools to partition and format the hard drive. If there is nothing on the disk you need to keep, start over. Grub is probably on the MBR. The install process should update Grub with your new install. |
In case that that does not help, verify that you burned the iso as an image and not as a file. If you inspect the CD, it should contain multiple files and directories, not just one.

Yes,
apologies - how to change boot order in BIOS from that kernerl shell ?? thanks again, I'm still find GRUB command line confusioning... |
Couldnt you just go into the bios by pressing one of the "F1-12" buttons and changing it that way?
|
well I get some thinger with asking me what language, then bunch of chocies, don't understand which one ,
|
F12 does nothing.. I keep pressing F2 on boot, it tell me to select language, then message such as:
'Compaq conputer corporation setup utility' FILE STORAGE SECURITY ADVANCED Not understand these selections. ... thanks |
well it could be any key or key combintion to enter BIOS setup (ie. F12, DEL, Ctrl+shift depending on what kind of BIOS u have). So right after u powerup your pc it should say on the screen for a very short time that what key or keys to be used to access bios setup.

Your problem is your computer is from Compaq. Compaq has very limited BIOS options. If you can find the boot order in the BIOS, change it so the CD-ROM drive is the first drive it checks upon boot up. Like what windycity_linux have posted, you will have to be observant while your computer is booting up in order to enter into the BIOS. Though it seems you do not know anything about the computer hardware. I suggest buying an A+ book and build a computer to understand the hardware. By building the computer, Linux becomes more friendly.

Your BIOS goes first, so forget about GRUB. In the BIOS you need to change the boot sequence. Pressing F2 seems to get you somewhere, so go through the options that it offers and see what can be changed. Read the manual that came with your computer will also help. If you don't have one, search the internet for it.
Maybe you can post make (OK, Compaq) and model. PS How did you manage to install knoppix if you can't boot from CD? |
If you can not figure out how to get into the BIOS, post the Compaq model you have. Their web site has a lot of documentation on their hardware. I have found all necessary doc on Compaq's ( I have two ), it they are well supported by HP, they bought out Compaq...

Thanks everyone.
When I did the install it was running windows98, at that time it booted right from the knoppix live CD. Now with knoppix installed on the hard drive it does not want to boot from cdrom. :/ I looked all thru the menu i get from pressing F2, nothing in there about boot order.. It is a presario, here is all the info I could gather: AMD K-6 3D 92.0 MB RAM 350 MHz 64kb cache 20 GB HD CD-ROM = compaq CRD-8322B HD controllers = dual fifo --- SiS 5513 dual PCI IDE controllers I'm going to look around the hp website to see if anything there to help.. |
I just tried this on my compaq and it got me to the boot order settings.
restart computer hit F10 immediatly after computer starts booting up select english language (or whatever your comfortable in) arrow over to storage arrow down to boot order change it to what you want |
thanks pharmd, I tried this but under 'storage', all I get is 2 choices, 'diskette drives' and 'IDE devices', but nothing about boot order ... I still need to check out hp website about this model . it is presario 5070. thanks again,

This is how to enter the BIOS setup on your system, I cut and pasted it from Compaq's web site.
