Alright Problem One, as embarassing as this is to say. I am a complete and utter no doubt about it newb to linux. I know barely anything about it generally speaking. But can work with it, if that makes any sence. Bottom line is I have been wanting to make the big switch so to speak, and been wanting that for some time to come now. Other then that my spelling sucks so I am sorry in advance. My ultimate desire is to use linux not only on a person level for play but to use it as web, email, sql, etc.. hosting enviroment for multiple sites (35+ and growing) but that aside, Im not here to get help on setting up my systems and network as a hosting enviroment (well not yet I may be back later for some help there but for now I think I can get that pretty well set up once i get past my initial set of problems.)
Now the real problem since Ive blabed on about myself enough, lol..
I have tryed countless installs of linux from FreeBSD to Gentoo to RedHat, to Ubunto and some I cant even remember and various version there of.. All of them I have gotten the same general Problem. Everything Installs fine, everything seems to go smooth. But as soon as the install is done, and after the system reboots all loads fine until the BIOS, once the BIOS is done initializing the system halts, and does not pass go, and does not collect 200$.. Everytime With a Similar message, "Loading Error", "Read Error" "Grub loading Stage2Read Error" and the list goes on.. Now don't get me wrong Im not a newb in the sence that this is my first resort I have done my share of googling and digging on fourms for answers which the mentioned error does seem to pop up alot but none ever seem to be resolved on the forum or don't seem to fit my issues..
So all in all as long winded as I am, I guess I am trying to seek help in where I might be going wrong, or whats not correctly set or something. I should mention also that the 7 HD's in use are all acting as there own containers, Independant of one another, rather then RAID'ing them as one mass container. Don't know if that makes any diffrence or not but thought I would mention it. I am also just trying to get any install to run as the OS on one drive and the other drives will be running as storage ultimately for sites, and other data. Not looking to run a dual boot with XP NT Vista 2000/2003 just linux by itself. Also by the way. This system orginally had XP, then Server 2003 on it prior which worked accordingly but lets face it MS is a resouce hog or in my opinion it is hence the desire for the switch.
Other then that. I am on a super tight budget so I can afford anything outside of what I can get free online as far as software goes. So that Said, what distro would you suggest would be my best flavor of handeling Multiple sites hosted on it, and whats a good mailserver for multiple domains?
Well Im sorry to dry your eyes with all the reading but any and all help is much appreciated. Thanks In advance, and ill be back soon.
In reply to CERC SATA 2S, that unfortunately did not seem to apply to my system or issues but indeed thanks for the reply.
As for reinstalling the Grub, I have not been able to, I can't get past the bios loading before the system halts. Once the bios loads and it goes to what I would assume is the grub or MBR is it?.. the system halts, always with the same error to the effect of "Read Error" or along the lines there of. Doesnt matter the flavor of linux, and does not matter the options I choose. Like I mentioned prior I have tryed several Distros, and with each distro I have probally attempted fresh installs about 30 times already from older to newer versions of any particular distro to just choosing diffrent options with a single distro.
The only serious change that I have made to attempting to install is I finally broke down and created one master container for the 7 drives as upposed to them being independant drives, and even that didnt work, I'm starting to think that with this system I am going to be stuck using MS software, cause XP, 2000, 2003 have all worked without fail outside of it being MS, and being resource ____insert profanity here______...
