Binutils Help, what else do i do?

Hey guys,
so here's the thing :
I want to install this driver for my NVIDIA video card, and so I downloaded the .run file I needed. So first thing I did was I used the "sh <filename>" command, and it said I needed binutils. So I downloaded it and I went into terminal and use command : "gzip -d <file.gzip.tar> so now its un-zipped from gzip. Then I used the "tar -xf <filename.tar>" to unpack all the files into one directory.
So now I thought I was done, and went to the terminal and used the "sh <filename>" to install it correct? And then the same error came up. Here is what it is :

ERROR: Unable to find the system utility `ld`; please make sure you have the
package 'binutils' installed. If you do have binutils installed,
then please check that `ld` is in your PATH.

Now in the directory, I see the 'ld' file, so I know it's there, but I dont know why it's not detecting it? I really need help guys, anything would be appreciated!

What distro are you on?
Sounds like you will have to configure and make the binaries extracted from that gzip. Im pretty newb, so as far as compiling goes, I just see if I can "make configure", then "make" then "make install"
