Bi-directional pipelines

I have two programs, say prog1 and prog2. I want to send the standard output of prog1 to the standard input of prog2 and the standard output of prog2 to the standard input of prog1. I know that this can be accomplished by using fifos and more than one consoles but I was wondering if this can be done with only one console.

I found this it may be what you're looking for if you don't mind C code (and really, who minds C code right?) There is a shell script version also at this page, but it uses the aforementioned fifos(it does not however mention anything about extra consoles, so you might look through the script and see if it is was you are after)
