Better Menu Editor for GNOME

Hi, I use GNOME 2.14.2. I don't like Alacarte. It's slow, and laborious to drag all those files around. I looked in /usr/share/applications, and saw all those linked apps. I couldn't do anything with them that affected the GNOME panel.

I know I can create my own .desktop entries, but I'll be damned if I'm going to do that with all the existing entries in my menu.

What are my options?

One of the most annoying things about Gnome (IMHO). There is a utility called "SMEG" (Simple menu editor for Gnome) I suspect it simply got renamed to Alacarte.

This is one reason that has me considering to switching to KDE. (But then I'll be posting here complaining that everything starts with "k"....;) )

While you have probably already done this, Have you looked at running something like Fluxbox instead? The menu can be adjusted simply by copying and pointing to the copied version, and then this can be easily configured. (look up fluxbox menus on Google). For eye candy, theres always 'Desklets', which gives an abundance of choices for nifty stuff. The other window managers I've tried seem a little too cluttered (only because I'm new and don't want to work without a good gui).
