Check out DSL. I have been looking at putting it on a pen drive. The only problem is I don't have a freed up pen drive. http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/

It is only supposed to be around 50 mb or so.

dsl vs puppy? which has better wireless drivers and applications? i think puppy can have opera. also, if i can save my data does that mean i can add my own programs, ie. gimp, vpn client....drivers....?

I think dsl does. No I don't think you can. But once you install the program then you should be able to.

clarify. can i install my own programs? can i save my current system state? all on the same pendrive i am running the OS off of? ie. treat the usb as my hard drive?

Never thought about it like that. You have me intereseted in seeing if that is possible. I want to say you can. The reason for that is you can save your thunderbird mail so in theory yes you should be able too.
