One recommendation since so many books are dated, is to check your local library. I have found a bit in a lot of books, useful, but no one book, that I would consider the GO TO and not out of date, book.

Hi,

Basic core books can be very useful resources, even if the date may seem out of date by a user. Semantics and syntax may have some differences but a user should still use 'man command' to get their systems syntax for a command.

Discarding something because of date will cause that user to miss some very valuable resources.

Absolutely.

Bigger organizations are going to use stuff like RHEL and other distributions that don't change as rapidly as the distributions that we use as users and enthusiasts. So, a book that seems out of date by actual date, may in fact, still be good.
