Welcome to Linux Questions!
Visit The Linux Documentation Project (TLDP) website. Read GUIDES and HOWTO's from it. Also your chosen distro has documentations as manual and others. Read articles on Wikipedia about Linux and it's various parts. |
Welcome aboard.
(See my 'sig') |
Try some Linux distributions either loaded as virtual machines or as live boot distributions, and learn by doing.
LQ has ISO files of many distributions as well as distribution summaries. See the SiteMap which shows as a link in the Main Menu section to the right in your LQ account screens. |
Simple GUI stuff is available on your distro, look for the "Help" tab or use F1 for context help.
On a terminal look for Man (cmd), info (cmd) or in /usr/share/doc/ these will be likely to specific to your distro. (cmd) --help on a terminal will give you options, or usage, alternatives to a command. for general GNU/Linux docs see above replies but be aware of changes over the years and the date of the document. In addition to the resources mentioned above, I recommend Going Linux, a podcast oriented to new and intermediate users. The website contains a large number of articles and some screencasts that can be most helpful.

If you've got some experience, then Linux from Scratch and download the two books: LFS ans BLFS. Even if you never intend to actually do this, you will find a lot of very useful information on the various libraries, dependencies, and window managers, especially on how to set up .xinitrc scripts that you don't get from other sources. |
