Best Gaming Distro?

Hello everyone, this is my first post and first time to the forums, a friend refered me here and so far its been great have two questions for you guys

1: What (if any) is the best gaming distro out there, IE: some will be easier to find drivers for than others, some will have an easier install of WINE/WINEX

2: i have a dummy system thats a p4 @ 1.7/GF4ti4200/768MB pc2100/CDRW LITEon....in RH9 i can't seem to get the .run file to execute right, when i try to run it through a terminal, it says i have to quit X server, so i racked my brain and came up with nothing, how do i end the X server? and how would i change the config around to make it boot into CLI from now on?

Any help that anyone has is allways a great thing to see, and i would be most happy. don't flame to bad as im a linux newb ;p

this is a game install? this sounds more like an nvidia driver setup.

anyway, ctrl+alt+f1 will take you to single user mode. here's where i get a bit foggy. i think login as root and then type the command "init 3" without the quotes. that should kill X. then you can log in and type the ./*.run command.

i also can't remember if you can get back to your gui login or not, but you can try ctrl+alt+f7 and see if you can get back to your gui session.

awesome that worked out just fine, i get more than 1 FPS from that gradious-like arcade game now ;p thanks alot!

Change the run level by editing the /etc/inittab file. Change it to 3 to boot in text mode, and change it to 5 to boot into GUI. And, Red Hat & Mandrake are the best game distro's just because a lot of people use them, and thus you get more help!

Any distro can play games, but Gentoo is probably the coolest. Only because you can easily 'emerge' most vid card drivers and a lot of games as well. They also put out a gaming optimized kernel :)

Very cool of you all, i got the one p4 1.7 NVIDIA base system up and running, now im having a problem with my "real" gaming machine...gonna search for help about 9800xt drivers, if that doesn't come up with anything ill start a new thread and again THANK YOU!!

BTW right now im running RH9 but with the FEDORA thing going on, i think i might switch distro's, im even considering buying SUSE pro w/ the WINE Rack thing.....again thanks alot everyone!

What's wrong with Fedora?

speed can be an issue with fedora.

i have a geforce 4ti 4400. fedora, after turning off some services, gives me about 3300 fps in glxgears, a clean slack install, or slack after installing dropline, gives me about 4k fps...

pretty big difference. thats about as much of a jump as i got when i threw a 4600 in here.

you can probably tweak fedora a little bit, and get that kind of performence out of it, but it would take a little looking.

fedora is probably a better all around distro, and requires less setup, but i really love slackware with dropline, and reccomend it to anyone, esp when performence counts
