Best distro for my specs?
Tried Xubuntu and Ubuntu, both ran pretty slow.

welcome to lq Timewall
um, can you post the output of lspci and cat /proc/cpuinfo |
Performance is more a matter of your system's configuration than the distro you run. There are hundreds of ways you can tweak system speed. It would help to know what's slowing you down. Otherwize, I wouldn't know where to even start.
Sorry, Lou |
What seems to be slowing me down is Xorg, which often runs at 100% CPU when I'm browsing the web - the computer seems to hang. Thanks for any help you guys can give - I'm very much a Linux newbie.

how much ram does it have?
I think almost any distro would work good... My 2 pc's are both amd's amd athlonXP 2400+ and athlon64 3300+ 2400 has nvidia mx4000 and 3300 has crappy sis graphics I would go for either slack or arch with a lite desktop like icewm, fluxbox, jwm, etc If you wanna install slack or arch and any lite desktop and dont know how I'll help you |
I'm not exactly sure how much RAM I have:
total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 434 417 16 0 6 130 -/+ buffers/cache: 280 153 Swap: 525 151 374 I mean, how would I have 434 megs of RAM? That's an odd number. Anyway, I am interested in a lite distro and instructions about how to install it. I don't really know much about slack, though I am interested in learning more. Really, I would like a lite one that could still run a good variety of programs. I've got the space for a full-featured distro, but my comp just can't seem to push the graphical elements. |
last
Look at the graphics card on board or otherwise
Fred |
Can anyone tell me a bit more about slack and/or installing a lite desktop? My knowledge of Linux is limited to kind of pre-packaged distros like Ubuntu.
|
I made a couple you can try and can point you to other livecd/usbs based on slackware
theres my slack based distros with lite desktops http://linux.softpedia.com/get/Syste...SB-55041.shtml http://linux.softpedia.com/get/Syste...86-54962.shtml and zenwalk live, vector light live, SalixOS, Linvo, fluxflux, slax, absolute slack-mini-server, ultima, and alot others lite desktops you wanna check out are blackbox, fluxbox, icewm, scrotwm, jwm, openbox, fvwm, and afterstep, e17, etc I have a Template for making a Slackware'ish DVD featuring vector light live zenwalk live linvo live ultima live moolux slax and you can put it all on a 4GB or bigger USB if you want it tell me and I'll tell you how to connstruct it |
