best desktop linux distro?

I have had enough of Windows and would like to know which linux distro is most suited to replace a windows style environment.
And would also like to know if there is something that allows windows programs run on linux, eg use cyberlink dvd and ms office on linux.?

mandrake, red hat, suse, and so on. if you want to know the 'best' distro, just READ the topics on this board!

re: running windows programs in linux, you usually do not need to. For example, get OpenOffice.org to open most micro$oft office, and Sun staroffice documents, get mplayer or xine to play dvds. you could use wine, winex, win4lin or v,ware to run windows programs, but if you have done your homework, you probably will not want to run these hairy top heavy programs when there's a perfectly good native alternative.

www.distrowatch.com is also a good place to start....

I vote none of the above. Linux to me isn't Windows, it shouldn't have to be like Windows. It wasn't created to be like Windows. I say start out with a easy to use distro like Mandrake and learn or get to know Linux. If your really tired of Windows, then learning Linux shouldn't be a problem.

Linux, unlike Windoze, can be whatever you want it to be :D !!

I wouldn't recommend trying Corel, its outdated and probably the worst distro to ever come out. If you want a good newbie distro, try Mandrake..

Ok, i shall download Mandrake
