besides logout and log in, how to make the new PATH effective


After I set the PATH variable in .bash_profile, besides logout and log in, how to make the new PATH effective?

source .bash_profile from within the directory.

Or run
/bin/bash
or whatever shell you want.

That's about the same as logging out and in again but with less hassle. You don't get the command history, for example.
