You probably have set beryl to start with xgl as the rendering platform. That doesn't seem to work. Try it with AIGLX or with Nvidia, but if you use Nvidia (which is certainly the fastest), you will encounter the black window bug - which is a bug in the Nvidia driver.

Set your xorg.conf file like this (with changes that make it appropriate for your particular installation):
Code:
Section "Device"
    Identifier "Videocard0"
    VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
    BoardName "GeForce 7800 GS"
    Driver "nvidia"
    Option "BackStoring" "True"
    Option "DisableGLXRootClipping" "true"
    Option "RenderAccel" "True"
EndSection
Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen0"
    Device "Videocard0"
    Monitor "monitor1"
    DefaultDepth 24

    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 24
        Modes "1600x1200" "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
    EndSubsection
    Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"
    Option "AllowGLXWithComposite" "True"
Option "DamageEvents" "True
Option "UseEvents" "False"
Option "TripleBuffer" "True"
Option "BackingStore" "True"
    Option "metamodes" "1680x1050 +0+0; 1440x900 +0+0; 1680x1050_60 +0+0"
EndSection

Section "Extensions"
    Option "Composite" "Enable"
    Option "RENDER" "Enable"
EndSection
Pay attention to the Options; these are the choices that seem to work best with beryl and nvidia. Your card may not support all these Options; particularly BackingStore and TripleBuffer are not supported in all cards.

Make sure that under Section "Module" you do a Load "glx"

Any errors will be identified in /var/log/Xorg.0.log. If you continue to have problems, check there for information.
