Berry Linux ( A good option for newbies )

Hello ,
I am a newbie sorta in Linux world. I already tried
many distro's including Mandriva 2006, Slackware 10.1,
SuSe 10.x , Knoppix LIVE, Ubuntu, Gentoo LIVE,Berry Linux LIVE.

My all time fav Linux distro is Mandriva & in LIVE CD
catagory i prefer "Berry Linux".

Not many newbies know about "Berry Linux". Search at
google and you'll find it's web site. Berry Linux 0.72
version is based on Fedora Core 5. Everything is automated in it like in Windows XP. It automatically
mounts Windows partitions for you. In UBUNTU 6.06 LIVE
it gives mnt error. Berry has good KDE interface. And
it has good support for wireless internet, i already
using internet via LIVE CD of Berry. It's a
cool experience to surf internet via a LIVE CD....
Via LIVE CD you can also do everything.

LIVE LINUX is really a good option for newbies. No
need to make partitions on hard disk. Run your linux
from CD. No harm to computer, no data loss problem.
Try out it's good. Once you start using LIVE LINUX,
day by day you'll avoid using Windows XP, Haha ..Because
those distro's are really really amazing.. More plug n
play support even if ur not an technical person.

Best of luck,
Regard's,
:Pengy: :newbie:

I have been a fan of Berry Linux for many moons!
I do install it onto the hard drive so I can tweak it and remove all of that SCIM related stuff.
I wish he would make an English only version!

Sounds berry good...

Seriously, I'll have to give it a try. Live CD...KDE desktop...sounds like my kind of live CD!

Xena 08-02-2006 11:05 AM

kubuntu is also a live CD KDE thingy, which I found most impressive. Last version was out June 2006.

Unfortunately, there's no pun to go with it :/

One more famous and amazing LIVE Linux distro is Knoppix
Refer www.knoppix.net for more info.

Many user's use Knoppix as a live cd option from the beginning. Now
a days all distro's are available in LIVE version. But Knoppix is
there from the beginning. Knoppix specially only goes for LIVE
CD project's. :)

Xena 08-02-2006 03:08 PM

knoppix is good, certainly, lots of software, but kubuntu is newer and supports more things (I got my wireless lan working in kubuntu, knoppix couldn't even see the card).

And no, I'm not starting a flame war, like I say, knoppix is good, LOTS of software. But better suited as a "rescue" disk in my opinion.

But as they say, you pay your money, you take your choice... only, we didn't pay no money, but we still choose ;)

I downloaded and installed berry the other night and it is certainly a beautiful and interesting distro. Seems pretty fast.

However, I'm kind of used to synaptic (and netpkg from zenwalk) and I can't see how to update/install packages here. In the cli I've typed 'yum update' and it downloads a bunch of stuff but then stops with dependancy errors. I've also tried 'yum install opera' and again it seems to download stuff and ends with a crash.

Any advice you could give would be greatly appreciated. The english speaking forum over there is very small at the present.

I received Kubuntu Free shipit pack yesterday afternoon. Today morning i tried LIVE
version of Kubuntu LTS 6.06 . Hmm ....Good KDE interface but in LIVE environment not
giving much option's like Games or other. Rest is good in it. Good thing in Linux is
it's Open Source, use it by the way you like it..Hehe  There are always positive and
negetive points in all OS. We can't blame those developer's. Anyway, now Linux OS's are
more plug n play and it's a good thing for newbies and for home user's. Altight,

Regard's,

yeah I might have to try it,

I'm a real Distro Freak, I have like 60 now... I tried Korazza (spelling?) liked it alot, though It was two underfurnished for my liking. aslo Zenwalk Live Didn't impress me much plain, bland and kept freezing, wouldn't detect certain H/W on bootup etc

So it is PCLinuxOS for me all the way ;)

Help me install berry

I just "discovered" berry today. It looks like some of you have successfully installed berry... on the hard drive I presume. Can someone please provide me instructions? I could not really follow the instructions on berry's website. Thanks in advance.

homey 08-14-2006 06:46 AM

I think they may have trouble translating to english sometimes.

When you are booted into the berry livecd, click on the apple icon ( lower left ) and go to
BERRY / Berry Linux Installer
enter the root password which is root
1. Configure Installation
Choose the partition ....

2. Start Installation ....

Note: The network settings will likely need changing as he has it setup for his network. This is done as root user in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 and /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth1 .
Also, /etc/sysconfig/network .
Normally, a person would use system-config-network but, that isn't installed for some reason.

Hi, am new to berry linux. I have the live cd 72, and it is not going online to the internet. I never had such a problem with any other distro. It looks soooo beautiful, but without being connected to the internet it will not help me. It should detect it automatic, then i tried to go to netcard and it will not get online, i use only etho1, not etho0, so what to do? it gives me kind my ip add and some other numbers and i just click ok always, and then i try to gt online, but again, it will not do this. help. I don`t want to install it, I want to use the live cd.

homey 09-13-2006 04:46 PM

He has the network setup to his gateway and addy. You can edit that as root user in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 and /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth1 .
Also, have a look at /etc/sysconfig/network.

Then, I would run as root the command: service network restart.

There is a tool in the kmenu for network setup but, I have not always had good results from that.

bchaynes3 09-13-2006 05:58 PM

Berry Linux 0.73 is available from LQ ISO....two clicks away... It is a nice distro (LIVE)....too pretty for me. Also, I could not Copy from the Console, but that is probably something I am doing wrong.....ReaderRat

Penguin of Wonder 09-13-2006 06:12 PM

Alot of times if you highlight it in the console, and then middle click (the wheel) in the text box, it will copy and paste for you.

bchaynes3 09-13-2006 06:49 PM

I could not get it to highlight the text...............ReaderRat

That's right, it uses yum by default. You can update by using the command: yum update

Your having broadband connection? You need to manually
add IP address, subnet mask, DNS settting and then you'll be able
to browse internet. :)

Recently Berry Linux group released it's .78 version. :) But in versions .76 onwards i saw no plugins by default for multimedia players etc.

I am a brand new spanking newbie at Linux and am really excited!
I am interested in the Berry Linux but I just want to clear one thing for myself.
If I use the LIVE CD of Berry Linux, I essentially run the kernel off the cd?
Because I'm new at this I just dont want to install anything or delete any partitions. I also play alot of computer games so I am hoping I can just not load the LiveCD and boot up windowsxp as normal...is this correct?

Any information would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Cupillac

AshleyScott 01-23-2007 05:13 PM

bye bye all. 8)

sco1984 01-23-2007 11:41 PM

Hello Cupillac,
Well, LIVE Linux can't give you 100% equal performance which an installed OS gives. LIVE Linux is a good kick start to learn linux.
To get familier with GUi interface of Linux. When you use LIVE Linux for some time, you can think of switching to installable version of Linux OS no matter which distro. I am still a newbie some how. I dont no much linux command line.

I suggest you to go for "Mandriva 2007" version. It's very user friendly linux distro. I use it from the beginning. And good thing about Mandriva is it detects all hardware devices, and installs drievrs automatically. You dont need to install drivers separately.

About games..Hmmmm..Windows based games are designed only for Microsoft Windows OS's. They cant run on Linux. But in market there are many games designed for Linux as well. in Berry Linux LIVE you get small games with it by default.

LIVE CD is nothing but linux which boots from CD. If you remove the cd from the cd rom, Windows XP will boot in normal mode.:)

Regards,
Amey Abhyankar.

Which linux distro your going to install? I sugegst Mandriva. Very user friendly linux distro. I am not advertising Mandriva :p :tisk: . But it's true. Mandriva is cool and supports most common computer hardware including dial up modems :)

Regards,
Amey.

yaguara5 01-24-2007 05:06 PM

if you want an easy newbee user friendly Linux distro, so i woud tell you only PClinuxOS all the way. I use now Mandriva 2007 for a week installed, or more, and there is not everything working like it should, and also you can`t install anything from the Synaptic, i don`t no why?
in Pclinuxos is all there waht you need, and its the best and most user friendly distro.
I Go back to pclinuxos when i can use my wireless connection, this is the only thing why I use right now Mandriva 2007, cause there i can use my wireless connection. But also in Pclinuxos is it already in the Synaptic since today. I wait till the pclinuxos 2007 release comes out the end of this month, and hen I am back there completely. From there al works out of the box.
Regards.
