Battery Monitor doesn't - Ubuntu 7.10

I've traweled through pages of stuff trying to discover why the gnome battery monitor doesn't work - it always shows AC power. Diagnostics I've run fail to find the battery. Anybody got any ideas (and simple instructions, please) on how to proceed?

I installed lp-batmon - but have no idea of how to get it to run!

Can you post your hardware specs and the version of Linux you're running? There's not much in the way of information in your post to go on... But as a quick check, do you have the APM or ACPI (whichever is appropriate for your system) loaded?

I think you need powersave package installed for that to work. Debian has a great laptop install, and Etch has become much more user friendly. I recently installed Etch on a lappy, and everything worked perfectly.

Using ubuntu 7.10 - updated via synaptic.

acpi from terminal reports no info for battery or thermal - power line plugged-in.

I've tried every comination of acpi and/or apm in services. Makes no difference.

Loading powersave makes no difference either.

Try these packages: suspend or uswsusp
