Basic ls command
 
Can someone help basic question, using the ls command i need to display access rights, what methods can i use?and examples would be great.

Or start the Midnight Commander with "mc" in any console, set the right panel to "Info" with F9 and you have all the filerights displayed uber-comfy... :D

i dont think i was specific enough, i need to get the numeric access rights values

Type of desired output, the lower sets of numbers

...but in this way mc shows only the rights per highlighted entry!

Yeah, go for the Midnight Commander version I postet right up there, it shows the octal values of the chmod too. Always remember, mc is your friend ;)

Hum, true. But on the other hand if you just look at the way the rights are usually displayed in the long ls outputs for a couple of minutes you see the octal values, come on, it's as simple as 1+2+4 ;)

I find mc kind of hard to get used to. Can you recommend some tips/sites to help with mc?

Look at the man-page ("man mc" in console) - the documentation is as detailed as it could be.
