Basic Linux Networking and setting up ssh/telnet/ftp user accounts...


Does any 1 know where i can get information off the net on Basic Linux Networking and setting up ssh/telnet/ftp user accounts??? or prehaps a book i could buy.

It would need to be for a very new newbie

Hi there,

To setup those services, you can find the answers by searching through some threads on this board and on google. As for a book, I really recommend Red Hat Linux Bible. That was the book that taught me a lot of things in Linux. I do not know of any good books focused on Mandrake sorry. For ssh, use Openssh. For ftp, use proftpd (very easy and simple to setup). Most people here would advise against using telnet since it passes usernames and passwords in plain text. I personally don't use it either but if you are aware of the consequences, then be my guest and use it . Ftp,ssh, and telnet (and most others) use the user accounts that are on the system. So therefore, you do not need to add an account for each service individually. Let me know if you have any questions. Good luck...
