bash won't recognise "make"command suse 9.1

I'm using SuSE 9.1 and trying to install a new driver for my printer from HP. All well , Arkive has extracted the files into a suitable directory; ./configure has executed and I've got a Makefile in the directory. When I invoke make, Bash comes back with "command not found". It doesn't matter whether I'm root or not. I've previously reinstalled 9.1 for other reasons and I'm sure that this has worked on its previous incarnation. Any suggestions gratefully received - thanks.

install make.... normally this is part of a mass of "development tools" or suchlike in your package manager.
